five years in prison. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz. today's sentencing comes after the former professional fighter pleaded no contest to attempted murder last year. >> abc seven news reporter lauren martinez was in court and has more, including why, despite hoping for less of a sentence. velasquez's attorney thinks today's sentencing was the right one. >> former ufc heavyweight champion cain velasquez will head to prison for attempted murder. on monday, velasquez was sentenced inside a santa clara county courtroom. his lawyer addressed the media right after the sentencing. >> i do think that the court made a good decision today, one that takes into consideration all of the complexities of this case. >> in february 2022, velasquez is accused of shooting at a man during an 11 mile, ten minute high speed car chase in morgan hill. the person he chased, harry goularte, is accused of molesting velasquez's four year old son at the time. while at daycare, goulart's mother, patricia bender, who ran the

daycare, and goularte stepfather, paul bender, were inside the vehicle during the chase. paul bender was shot and injured by velasquez for the first time. the goularte and bender families spoke out. >> the sentence is extremely disappointing. it's based on an alleged allegation that has no basis. it is unfounded. we are looking for the opportunity in harry's case to prove that. >> our cameras were not allowed to record inside the courtroom, but it was completely packed. people on both sides of this case were emotional. they provided tearful victim impact statements. cain velasquez read a statement to the judge himself. he called his actions that day reckless, dangerous and that he is truly sorry. >> it is unusual in my line of business to have defendants take such accountability in the way that he did. >> he was sentenced to five years with time served already. in all, he's expected to serve one more year in prison. >> and i think that that is a

lesson to anybody who's thinking about doing something like this, that you cannot take the law into your own hands. >> the judge appeared to fight through his own tears during the final moments of sentencing. >> mr. velasquez is a good person. he made a bad choice. but all of us, especially parents, understand why that choice was made. >> a trial for velasquez's son's molestation case is set for june in san jose. lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> happening tomorrow night at six. the santa rosa city school board of education is holding a special meeting to discuss the return of school resource officers, or sros. the draft agreement would put one uniformed officer in santa rosa high schools in 2020. the district removed officers from schools in part to combat racial prejudice in the justice system. in 2023, a deadly stabbing of a student at montgomery high pushed many in the community to demand the return of sros.

>> charges were filed today in the fatal shooting of an oakland 15 year old. a 16 year old boy was charged with murder, robbery and the discharge of a firearm during a violent felony. he remains in custody in alameda county juvenile hall. oakland police say durbin alvarado was about to head to soccer practice when this happened. >> while waiting for his friend, a suspect, an armed suspect confronted him and attempted to steal his backpack. during the confrontation, the suspect fired multiple times at durbin, striking him and killing him. a search warrant was served at the suspect's residence, and we recovered valuable evidence, including a firearm. >> police say there are no other suspects in the case. >> a former cal football player is in critical condition tonight after a crash this weekend that killed his 23 year old fiancee. as abc seven news reporter leslie brinkley explains, the pair was struck by a speeding car while that driver was trying to get away from police.

>> at 12:41 a.m. sunday. 23 year old villa, malia paulina tuipulotu and her fiance left a family gathering in pittsburgh near the corner of east leland road and gladstone drive. a speeding car rammed into their suv. tuipulotu died at the scene. her fiance, former football player beau tagaloa, is in critical condition. the accident started with a high speed pursuit on highway four, with chp chasing a stolen car. chp said in a statement a suspect armed with a stolen handgun operating a stolen gray infiniti sedan was observed to be traveling at speeds exceeding 100mph. officers caught up with the suspect's car as it exited the freeway, and they tried to make a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled on city streets, ending with the crash. the suspect survived and is also hospitalized. a gofundme has raised over $38,000 to go toward

funeral costs for tuipulotu. her family describes her as a beautiful person inside and out, and they say she was set to get married this summer. cal athletics released a statement saying our thoughts are with bo and his loved ones during this difficult time. the contra costa county da's office is heading up the investigation into the accident with assistance from chp and pittsburg police. i'm leslie brinkley, abc seven news. >> the san francisco police department says someone attempted to rob the chanel store in union square early this morning. it happened about 4:30 a.m. officers saw suspects try to use a car to break into the store, but they were not successful. they then drove off. the entry doors were damaged, as you can see, but no merchandise appears to have been stolen and the suspects did not get into the store. police say no arrests have yet been made. >> today, bay area based dna testing firm 23 and me filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy, and now

is just the beginning of warm weather. abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel is here. hi, sandy. >> hi, there. yeah, dan, it feels more like summer outside than spring, that's for sure. take a look at these temperatures. it is in the 80s from santa rosa to san jose right now. 79. in the city, 77 in oakland. by the way, we do have one record high so far. i'm waiting for the official word, but oakland downtown has hit 82 degrees. previous record was 7514 degrees warmer right now in oakland compared to 24 hours ago. 18 degrees in half moon bay. half moon bay. you got up into the low 80s. and as we go, hour by hour, you'll notice it's still pretty warm at 6:00. as we head towards the 8:00 hour, we'll see some 70s and 60s. and then tomorrow morning we're going to begin with 50s. this will be the coolest point of the day. we're going to have much warmer weather by the afternoon hours. i'll be back with those highs coming right up. >> okay, we'll check back. thank you. sandhya. vandalism was discovered along san francisco's great highway early yesterday morning near noriega street. the

spray painted messages were in opposition to plans to close the road and create a new waterfront park. as you can see, they said things like gentrify and bad idea as well as open highway and can't afford to live here anymore. the vandalism was quickly removed. the new two mile park is scheduled to officially open april 12th. >> still ahead here, a bay area based air taxi service is now teaming up with a major airline. what this new partnership means for the future of joby aviation.

strike. that's now in its third week. transit operators have just voted down the latest contract offer. the results have just been announced. local atu members voted no on the offer, which calls for an 11% pay increase over the three year contract. vta had originally offered 9%. atu leadership just spoke about today's vote a while ago. they tell us 83% of their voters rejected this latest proposal. >> this. this is in part due to vta's aggressive bargaining. in their latest offer, they presented us several items that they included in the package that were originally rejected, removed from the conversation back in january. had they not done that, we might have had a different outcome. >> the strike continues. bus and light rail service in the south bay has been suspended since march 9th. the transportation authority released a statement earlier today reading, quote, vta has put forward a more than fair proposal that ensures employees receive competitive pay and strong benefits for

themselves and their families at a time when so many workers across industries are facing uncertainty and job losses. vta is proud to offer stability and opportunity. >> business is about to take off for air taxi company joby aviation. the santa cruz company just signed a deal with virgin atlantic to offer service between heathrow airport in london and manchester. joby already has a deal with delta air lines. the electric air taxi can carry a pilot and four passengers. it can fly at speeds of up to 200 miles an hour, and will be used on flights up to 100 miles. joby expects to launch passenger service in the united states by early next year. >> all right. today has been spectacular. >> has it? absolutely perfect. and as we're about we're talking about just beautiful, beautiful weather today. take a look at this scene from redwood city where the cherry blossoms are in bloom. and some people even enjoying some alfresco dining. that's lovely. >> perfect day for it. take a look at the scene in emeryville. people were outside enjoying the

sunshine along the waterfront. so for the latest on this wonderful weather, let's get to abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel for how long it's going to last, sandhya. >> another day. so dan and ama enjoy while it lasts. let me show you a live picture right now from our santa cruz camera. absolutely gorgeous day. lots of blue skies. this is the warmest since last fall. i mean, we're going back all the way to october. some people are enjoying the beach, as you can see, 15 to 20 degrees above average for many city cities. here are the highs so far. i'm waiting for the official word, but santa rosa 83, oakland 82 downtown. that would be a record for today. 79 in san francisco, 81 concord, 83 redwood city and 81 in san jose. the coast is clear, as you can see on live doppler seven. and as we widen the picture here, high pressure is controlling our weather. with this ridge of high pressure in place offshore winds, the winds flowing clockwise around this high, we're getting that warmth. but one thing to watch out for along the coastline is the fact that we do have the possibility
